Thanks, now I understand. I'm not sure what it was I was counting but I was nowhere near 27 (more like 89). But my init_etherdev suggestion is still valid I think (no idea if it is "more correct" than making a char[]).
I'll go away now and read a little grep(1) before opening my mouth again on this topic :)
