HOSTCC wasn't exported here, I exported it myself.
I'm using slackware 3.0 (very old), but most things are upgraded.
GNU Make version 3.77, by Richard Stallman and Roland McGrath. GNU bash, version 2.03.0(1)-release (i586-pc-linux-gnulibc1)
Should I try make 3.78.1?
Things worked fine in 2.3.51.
