What kernel? What ide kernel patch?
What are the kernel boot messages for this disk?
What does hdparm -i say?

[HPT366 defaults to CHS, and CHS cannot be larger than 8 GB,
so in itself this is not surprising. On the other hand, my
34 GB disk works just fine on HPT366 on an unpatched 2.3.47.]
