Could you have a problem similar to what I describe below?

I find that the st module unloads itself after some time (a few hours?)
of not using the tape. Reloading does not help in my case, but unloading
the SCSI module and the reloading st (which loads the SCSI module)
brings the tape back to life.

(I remember that Irix 5.3 had a similar problem!)

I'd say that the st module should not be allowed to unload (but don't
know how that can be achieved).
