SubjectKernel v2.2.15pre3 SCSI 2940U2W with AIC7895 boot still broke.
Hi,

I'm trying to upgrade my linux kernel from v2.2.13 to v2.2.14 and I've
also applied pre-patch-2.2.15-3 from Alan Cox and running into boot
problems finishing the SCSI Channel B iinstruction download sequence.

I've included all the information that I can provide and can't go any
further. The information includes: PC h/w, current s/w configuration, the
problems being encountered during upgrade along with what was tried.
See item (A,B) for general information and see item (C) for the problem I'm
having.

A). My PC hardware Configuration
DELL Optiplex Gx1 333mhz Intel processor
128 Megs of RAM
1 GIG IDE QUANTUM drive
9 GIG SCSI Western Digital on an Adaptec 2940U2W AIC 7895
3com 3c59x ethercard

B). My current s/w and OS configurations:

setup #1 (old):

The 1Gig IDE drive contains MSDOS v6.22 and Linux v2.0.38 UMSDOS Filsys.

The 9Gig SCSI drive contains NT4.0 on partition two, MSDOS v6.22 on
partitions one, three and four. Linux v2.2.13/14 UMSDOS Filesys is running
on partition three which is a 2Gig partition.
- this version of linux doesn't have Xwindows or netscape
- this version of linux does have vgalibs, slang and glib
- no swap space activated.

setup #2 (new kernel):

Linux v2.2.13 UMSDOS kernel is booting and running with
(mnalis) s/w patch for pipe problem which caused init
to crash on boot:

Linux S/W installed:

S/W pkgs compiled agains't Linux v2.2.1 and installed.
-- binutils-2.9.1.0.24.tar.gz
-- bin86_0.13.0-4.deb
-- util-linux-2.9i.tar.gz
-- netkit v0.15 tarballs dated October 1999
-- update v2.11.tar.gz
-- egcs v2.95.2.tar.gz

S/W pkgs pre-compiled and installed are:
--installed libc6-dev_2.0.7t-1.deb precompiled binary
--installed egcs-1.0.3-glibc.x86.tar.bz2 precompile bin

All other s/w pkgs were compiled agains't linux kernel v2.2.1
using the above s/w pkgs to establish a baseline system.

Summary Info.........

-- Versions installed: (if some fields are empty or looks
-- unusual then possibly you have very old versions)

C). PROBLEM: Compiled the full Linux v2.2.14 tarball using
libc6 v2.0.7pre6 and for the following two gcc compilers
egcs v1.0.3 and gcc v2.95.2 and with linux v2.2.15pre3
patch.

The kernel compiled without problem when using either
gcc compiler version. However, when I tried to boot
the kernel using "loadlin v1.6a" for either of these
compilers, the kernel didn't finish booting and it hanged
trying to finish detection of the Adaptec 2940U2W AIC 7895
adapter card which has SCSI BIOS v1.33S2. Linux kernel
v2.2.13 was compiled using both these compilers and had
no problem.

Here is the sequence during boot and detection of the
Adaptec SCSI card in abbreviated form.

(scsi0) ....found PCI 14/0
(scsi0) ... Wide Channel A SCSI id=7
(scsi0) ... detected auto termination 32/255 SCBS
(scsi0) ... cables (Int-50=NO, Int-68=Yes, Ext-68=NO)
(scsi0) ... 374 instructions downloaded.

(scsi1) ... found PCI 14/1
(scsi1) ... Narrow Channel B SCSI id=7
(scsi1) .... detected auto termination 32/255 SCBS
(scsi1) ... cables (Int-50=NO, Ext-50=NO)

******* IT HANGS HERE FOREVER******
******* It never download another 374 instructions nor prints the
version number 5.1.11 on both channels.
It never detects the Western Digital SCSI drive on Channel A.
It never mounts the root filesystem and finishes the boot.
NOTE: There is only one SCSI drive/device in the system. The
rest are IDE (Harddrive and CDROM)

NOTENOTE: This is exactly the same problem I had when I upgraded from
Linux kernel v2.0.34 to v2.0.38. Linux v2.0.34 boots off the
IDE drive and detects and mounts the SCSI devices.

For this case the Linux kernel v2.2.13 boots off the SCSI and
detects and mounts the IDE devices; but when v2.2.14 with
v2.2.15pre3 is booted it hangs as listed above.

D). Linux v2.2.14 with v2.2.15pre3 patch Kernel Configuration I used.
