I'd thought of that. I saw that kmem_read refuses to read above
high_memory. But you've reminded me that some ISA devices live in low
memory.

Perhaps kmem_read should only permit reading ordinary memory mappings?
I suggest device access should always go throw /dev/mem anyway.
