I have PCI quirks turned on and it doesn't solve the problem. I grep'd for VIA in the Configuration directory and found a README about VIA chipsets and sound. I followed what it suggested and it still hangs within minutes, at most an hour.
Here is a subset of my boot up messages. As you can see, it does see the chipset and turn on the workaround.

I would love to try to figure this one out but from the sounds of it, VIA, needs to fix their buggy chipset because it also hangs at times on Windoze (according the the VIA-sound readme). I have not tried Windoze because I don't want Windoze on my server for obvious reasons. I may have to anyway just to prove that the board is faulty so I can return it without a restocking charge. It seems whenever you say Linux, the tech support people automatically stop listening and say "It works fine with Windows 98". This is the reason I want to figure this one out.
Does anyone know of a good Web site where I can "for sure" purchase PC components tested with Linux? I checked VAresearch but AFAIK, they only sell complete systems. I prefer to upgrade piece by piece as funds become available.
Thanks,
