But the mount process is still running and apparently holds a kernel
lock uninteruptible since all following mount requests block on
down_failed.

There is no firewall in between. I can mount from a sun client in the
same subnet whithout problems. O.K. perhaps the sun does not like that
the client is not in DNS. But on the other side this should not make
Linux unuseable.
