my system is a mix of IDE and SCSI. It happened on /dev/hda; mounted
filesystems msdos & ext2 were affected.

    gcc 2.7.2.3 libc5; kernel 2.2.9.

it happened when news.daily was run together with updatedb (e.g. quite some
    disk activities)
