The assignment always occurs, *unless* there is an exception (i.e. a signal) or unless this is C++ and someone has dome something silly with an operator=.
Please explain these purported non-occurrences that you think occur. Please explain where they are described in the standard.
Also, explain why your "gcc bug" is in every compiler from pcc on.
