Sorry about the subject line. End-of-day messages are dangerous.

If anyone is wondering, it turns out the cache was disabled when we turned
on the "Turbo mode" option in the BIOS. Apparently this is somewhat like
the proverbial red button with a Post-It on it that says "don't press me".
Turning off "Turbo mode" fixed the problem.
