Here is an ELF header.

00000000 7F 45 4C 46 01 01 01 00-00 00 20 00 00 00 00 00 ELF...... .....

I think you will find that byte offset 10 -> 15 are available. Byte at
offset 10 can definitely be modified and still run on Linux and Sun.
