I did note something else, when ever I try to mount my cdrom I see this in my messages file:
Mar 28 22:30:17 dogbert modprobe: can't locate module block-major-3
which would correlate to my /dev/hda, but IDE Cdrom is not compiled as a module. My fstab has /dev/hda, not /dev/cdrom as the entry.
