    Yes... I suggested this privately to Ted Ts'o a long time back and he
    made a very good comment; It's sufficiently important that we have
    bits of this that we shouldn't give people the option to remove it.

    Aside from that, it's called from all over the place, and many of
    those calls are speed critical.
