Have you tried running strace on the binary? Also, are you
using libc5, gibc2.0, or glibc2.1?

I have an Alpha running the 2.2.4 kernel and glibc 2.0.7p4
running the FEFnet ircd (based on 2.8.21-hybrid-5.3p4) and it runs
fine.
