Who's to say that the verification will even be reliable? That, is you read right off the buffer you just wrote, you might not even get data from the disk surface but the buffer. And that might be right when the controller just wrote trash all over the platter. Not to mention the potential to saturate the bus (IDE, of course).
I get 100MB/sec backups to /dev/null... :)
