Think of "max" as a soft limit rather than a hard one. Does not look so. I ran Andreas' exploit and I got this: mordor:~# cat /proc/sys/fs/inode-state 33754 1 1 0 0 0 0 And number growed quite fast. All this with update running and inode_nr = 2048 linux 2.2.2-pre2 of course.
