I recall that the software link (used to make PC-MOS/386, a multitasking, multiuser DOS v5 compatible OS in assembly) has a program called multilink for windows, that is able to have multiple dos boxes running off win 3.1x via serial ports, making it a (preemptive ?) multitasking piece of software.
