Linux 2.0.30 - 2.0.35 has a problem when nothing was causing pages to be reclaimed. That caused installer hangs and little else.
2.2.1 (and fortunately not 2.2.2pre4) has a problem where it doesnt stop a mke2fs filling so much ram it kills everything.
