If you have nm256.o driver module on your /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/misc/
directory, just add following lines to /etc/conf.modules.

=========
alias sound nm256
=========

I am using nm256 sound on my vaio F505DX with neomagic 256AV in this
configuration on linux 2.2.14pre12 redhat 6.1.
