I ran into similar files and a similar problem after allowing DOS's fdisk
to modify my partition table (never again). So it wasn't the exact same
situation... But the solution to my problem was to force a second
manual fsck after the first one created the files. The second pass found
the files to be invalid and removed them.

It couldn't hurt,
