Probably getty is failing because /dev/tty? doesn't exist. Did you make sure to start devfsd *very* early in your boot scripts and configure it to create compatibility entries?
BTW: there's no need to Cc the kernel list (or my announce list). I see things faster if they're just sent to me anyway.
