In 2.3.x at least, most of gcc's warnings of this nature [that I have seen] are bogus, especially when using 2.95.2. A lot of these warnings are generated from code which is logically correct, but gcc cannot see that for whatever reason: scoping, gotos, thick headedness, etc.
