Hmm... Alan - does this machine of your swap at all.

Mine here certainly doesn't normally - but I've just made sure it is
now. Ouch.

I think its certainly a possible candidate, as are the NFS changes. I
don't use NFS here, and have no stability problems, even under quite
high network load.

Right now, my machine is swapping _hard_ - I'll see how it lasts.
