hm, if you are using RAID on that oopsing server, i'd suggest upgrading to
the newest RAID patch:

http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha

on a pre3-2.1.120 kernel. With that version, lengthy mkraid is the past,
and background RAID reconstruction happens during idle IO time. It has a
couple of SMP and heavy swapping related stability fixes too.
