hm, if you are using RAID on that oopsing server, i'd suggest upgrading to the newest RAID patch:
http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/daemons/raid/alpha
on a pre3-2.1.120 kernel. With that version, lengthy mkraid is the past, and background RAID reconstruction happens during idle IO time. It has a couple of SMP and heavy swapping related stability fixes too.
