Weren't the sparse superblock changes merged into ext2? I created a filesystem (mke2fs -s 1 /dev/hdc4) and ended up with:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on /dev/hdc4 7285391 -27197 6935042 0% /mnt/4
as opposed to the non-sparse ext2 system of:
Filesystem 1024-blocks Used Available Capacity Mounted on /dev/hdc4 7285391 13 6907832 0% /mnt/4
Thought it might save space under a 7 gig parition by reducing redundancies. mke2fs was 1.10.
