Might have been better, or equal.
I do know that the hardware for the PC speaker is about the same as for the old Apple ][ speaker, except that the PC can do a square wave in hardware, and the Apple needed to do it by CPU.
I once converted an Apple ][ sound routine for the PC speaker. It was pretty straightforward.
