The first Celeron processors (without the a?) were without cache... guess why they added it back there? According to my information, it was because people were able to overclock the cacheless chips to 450Mhz and beyond. So they had to put cache in to keep people from making even more out of them ;) Naturally the cache is smaller than on the higher-end processors, but because it's directly connected unlike for example on PII it's plenty faster and indeed performs better on relatively small and static working- sets.
