Not that you would want to use the CPU cycles necessary to do this, but the timer associated with the PC speaker can be programmed to generate a supersonic tone, i.e., above normal audible range. Further, one can pulse-width modulate this tone with audio data. The speaker becomes a low-pass filter as well as a transducer. The result is audio that sounds at least as good as AM Radio, although it is quite low in volume. I have heard it done and, I think an early version of Linux had such a driver within.
