But.... I said it WORKS for me!
Nevertheless, I indeed do not have "options cdrom autoclose=1" in
conf.modules. Dmesg gives the following:

PIIX3: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX3: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
ide0: BM-DMA at 0xffa0-0xffa7, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
ide1: BM-DMA at 0xffa8-0xffaf, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd:pio
hda: QUANTUM BIGFOOT2550A, ATA DISK drive
hdb: FX001DE, ATAPI CDROM drive
hdc: Maxtor 90576D4, ATA DISK drive
ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15
hda: QUANTUM BIGFOOT2550A, 2457MB w/87kB Cache, CHS=624/128/63, DMA
hdc: Maxtor 90576D4, 5495MB w/256kB Cache, CHS=11166/16/63, DMA
hdb: ATAPI 4X CDROM drive, 128kB Cache
Uniform CDROM driver Revision: 2.13

I think I compiled cdrom support directly into the kernel, (the driver
wouldn't have shown up here) so I can't do the debug. You might want to
email rboos@student.uni-kl.de directly and ask him the same thing as I
don't think he subscribes to the list.
