I've had problems with UP, too. Actually, I only build and run UP kernels! Now, that I recompiled 2 test kernel of 2.1.120 fame, one with timeout of 1s and the other with 5s, I can't reproduce the "Keyboard timeout"s anymore. I most probably changed some other setting, too, so I'm not all that sure what was causing them in the first place.
After I get 121 patched and compiled, I'll be trying again...
