Has anybody heared something about the UDI project: http://www.sco.com/UDI/ It ist a project aimed to provide an environment for portable driver code. It is partially implemented in SCO Unixware, Openserver, IBM AIX, HP-UX, Digital UNIX and Solaris. That means that an UDI driver works on every UDI capable OS with a recompile. (http://www.sco.com/press/releases/1998/6816.html) The specs are public available! And even better: Everyone could participate in the Project. (ftp://ftp.cup.hp.com/pub/hp_stds/udi/Postscript/rules.ps.Z) Quoted from rules.ps: 1. Purpose The purpose of the Project UDI working group is to define and promote a Uniform Driver Interface specification, which would allow device drivers written to this specification to be supported, without change, by diverse operating system and platform vendors. Participation in the specification process includes a number of OS vendors and IHVs, and is open to new participants at any time. 2. Intellectual Property The specification is intended to be publicly available for implementation by anyone, whether or not they are participants in the working group. [.........] Could this be an option for Linux?
