Ok -- took a chance and added the MTRR. The problem does not occur using this
method.


[eastep@hozomeen linux]$ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 128MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0xa0800000 (2568MB), size= 2MB: write-combining, count=1
[eastep@hozomeen linux]$

Console performance improved substantially -- cat Makefile went from 7.7 seconds
elapsed to 3.75 seconds.
