Hmm, even without frame buffer devices, the system becomes rather unstable for me. Several processes give segmentation faults, and most processes begin to suffer from hanging. I get some Oops messages on the terminal that ran the process, but I neglected to copy them down.
So it probably isn't fb's fault...
