Yes, if possible do it so I don't have to copy the new driver over the old
one every time I upgrade my kernel :)
I have an Accton EN1207 and it needs the new driver to work after cold boot.
With old driver the media is not detected (an endless loop between 100 mbps
and 10 mbps mode). The new driver works for me.
