This probably means that the controller you used uses a
large number of 'spare' sectors on the drive.

Another formatting program might use less spare sectors
and with a larger sector size (1 or 2 kb) you could get
even more usable space.

The linux programs scsi-config and scsiinfo (the
scsiformat part, that is) will let you do this.
