Currently you cannot do a read() on a directory in ext2fs. If you allowed read() (and mmap etc.) on a directory to actually return the data from a specific file in the directory (index.html :), you would achieve many of the same benefits.
The major drawback is that some applications know that directories cannot be read, and do not even attempt it.
