I'd actually prefer to get the surprises, because this one definitely pointed to a real problem where somebody could have triggered the very same oops by just making sure the segments were invalid at the time of a APM event..
(And we definitely do want to do "lazy" cleanup of segments - it's just too painful to try to do it exactly).
