I thought of these, but the dir is /usr/src/linux, which is a link to /usr/src/linux-2.1.117, and the user is root. I did get annoyed and try to recompile the kernel as a non-root user, and it didn't get this error. The shell used is the public domain ksh. I'll try bash if anyone can actually say this might be it.
