When we restrict to read/write/llseek for >2GB files (i.e., we won't implement mmap() on them), the effect on speed will be probably unnoticeable.
Yes, my comment was specifically directed at the design option of allowing 64-bit offsets in the VM layer. No, I wasn't suggesting this design option. Bypassing the VM layer is easier to implement, doesn't impose a generic performance penalty for non-64-bit operations, and the only shortcoming is the mmap limitation. I think it's the right tradeoff.
