/etc/mnttab (/etc/mtab, actually) is either located in /var/run, or a
symlink to /proc/mounts, or both (which is what I prefer).

Of course, if you do this you need to remove all the code which tries to
update that file, play with /var/run/mtab~, or whatever. But if you have,
for instance, a busy server with possibly lots of parallel automounts of
slow NFS volumes, that's a good idea anyway.
