interesting...my 701c is running 2.1.115 just fine. No lockups or other problems. (great little machine, just wish the screen was > than 640x480 ;)
Do you have any idea what it was doing when it froze up? are you using the newest pcmcia-utils? anything in the logs? (try booting an older kernel and see if it comes up ok). How long is this time? do you have good battery/ac power?
