Not that unrealistic. Digital for example understood this way before most people did. You wanted an OSless Vax they sold you one. Its one of the reasons so many vaxen got sold
Get the yearly reports of any big unix vendor and see how many make a profit on their OS sales as opposed to the other parts of the business.
