I think a blacklist should contain firmware lists if possible.
I've got drives here where ones with older firmware versions are made out of plutonium by the antichrist, but identical units only with later firmware are fine.
The only draw back I see is a small amount of bloat if you want to be able to have inequalities to keep the blacklist size down (the firmware strings vary from unit to unit, but appear to be at most 8 bytes long, so a fair amount of variation is possible).
