All older S3 cards that I've ever run across only support VESA 1.2, _but_ I have found dos based tsr called S3VBE20 that provides vesa 2.0 support to all S3 cards (including my virge).
Before, I couldn't possibly use vesafb, but now that I've setup s3vbe to run on boot (and use loadlin to warm-boot linux) I get to enjoy the cute drunken penguin.
You should be able to find this proggie with yahoo or something; if not email me and I'll send you a copy.
