My little Maxtor hard drive works fine with:

/usr/sbin/hdparm -c1 -m16 -u1 -d1 -W1 -X34 /dev/hda # -S180

hda: Maxtor 71000 A, 958MB w/64kB Cache, CHS=1946/16/63, DMA

...this is the free warranty replacement when I accidently pushed the
previous one off the edge of a mouse pad while it was spinning, causing a
head crash. I've been using SMP 2.1.x kernels just about the entire time
with the same settings too.
