Another big candidate post 2.2 is the IP routing code. For most non router boxes the current code is all very nice, rather fast and complete overkill when your number of routes is typically about 5.
ANK made several passes for a few months this past year trying to rectify this the best he could, as you note it's still a bit excessive with the surgery which was done. He told me at the end he was happy enough not to have killed the patient ;-)
