As far as I know, the only machine to use the SH4 is Sega's new Dreamcast, which is not on the market yet. If by 'bytecode compatible' you mean is the instruction set upwards compatible, I believe this is the case. At least, it is true from the SH2 to the SH3. I haven't had a chance to go over the SH4 literature yet (too much crap on my desk).
