I was having problems compiling 2.0.35 and it turned out the my son
had "upgraded" the compiler on that particular box to
egcs-1.0.something.

I would suggest the following:

which gcc
gcc --version

Look carefully at the version of gcc.

When I reinstalled gcc-2.7.2.1 I had no further problems at least from
a compiler standpoint.
