I've compiled kernels in the 2.0.xx sequence lots of times, but I never had a problem like I've had with 2.1.108. I find no discussion of it in dejanews, so I've joined here just to see what you think.
The kernel configures/compiles fine. Lilo seems to install it, but on restart I get the lilo prompt, and choose linux-2.1.108, and then it says
loading linux-2.1.108 Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel
And there's nothing more. The disk lights on the cd and floppy light up, but it dies there. I get total system lockup and have to turn it off. Is it not finding the compressed kernel at all, or what?
Hardware. Dual PII-300, Symbios SCSI CARD (with NCR drivers), 2 SCSI HD, 1 SCSI tape, 1 SCSI CD, 1 SCSI ZIP drive.
Redhat Linux 5.1, upgraded for all errata.
I'm interested in this new kernel because I'm told it solves the long browse list problems that arise in samba when viewing shares on a win95 machine. Now, lists are usually truncated at 65 files or such, and in the smb usenet group they say this fixes it.
